Scoliosis

How Does Scoliosis Affect your Health?

  • Scoliosis is estimated to affect 4.5% of general population. In a nation of approximately 300 million people this mean that over 13 million cases of scoliosis exist, and almost 500 more are diagnosed each day – about 173,000 every year.
  • According to studies, the average scoliosis patient will suffer a 14-year reduction in their average life expectancy.
  • Other health considerations are head aches, shortness of breath, back pain, digestive problems, menstrual-cycle disturbances, leg, hip and knee pain, chronic fatigue, rib hump on one side, and future spinal kyphosis (widow’s hump).
  • Warning Signs

    Uneven shoulders

    Uneven hips

    Curve in the spine

    Uneven gap arm and side

    Leaning to one side

    Clothes not hanging properly

  • The Traditional Medical Model of Treatment for Scoliosis

    Medical Procedures—Passive

Until now, if you’ve been a scoliosis sufferer, you’ve had three options:

    1. Observation (less than 25 degrees curvature). Typically, nothing is done to treat scoliosis at this early stage besides “watching it.” And if you’re like most, it means watching it get worse.
    2. Brace (25-40 degrees curvature). Of course, the only hope here is to STOP progression—not to reduce it.  This is a psychological and physiological disability.
    3. Surgery (40+ degrees curvature). Surgery involves having rods inserted into your spine in an attempt to reduce and stabilize the curve.    Surgery has many potential complications, and curves are usually not able to be reduced more than 50%.  Studies show that surgery patients' curves increase 1-2 degrees a year following the surgery.
